Gleno Road Race

Club 20-mile Handicap Road Race Gleno Wednesday 11th April 2018.

Rhys McKendry wins opening club race of new season after sprinting clear from an eleven rider bunch with ¼ mile remaining. It was midway through the 20 lap race Rhys had his first break away and managed to hold off the bunch for three laps.

Fresh from a superb run in the Tour of the North Gary McCullough led the bunch in for 2nd followed by Mike Boal in 3rd and young under 16 Chris Donald taking a superb 4th place ahead of Iron Man Danny Hylands and the impressive Stephen Harkens both making come backs after a few years (5thand 6th). Young under 16 Johnnie McAuley rode very well taking 7th and Meta Johnston showed good form taking 8th ahead of Stephen Millar making a return after a lay off (9th). Peter Bingham in his first Madigan club race rode strongly to finish 10th and Bill John Johnston showed good form finishing at the tail end of the bunch in 11th

It was a hard nights racing for all, and good to see the new members going so well.

Many thanks to the Marshals Steven Stewart, Ken Brewster, Albert Douglas, Stephen Farr and Jeremy Martin. Thanks also to Ronnie on the line. DR.

Ballygalley Road Bike TT

Club 10-mile Time Trial (Road Bikes) Ballygalley Wednesday 18th April 2018.
On a blustery evening on the Antrim coast riders still recorded good times. Congratulations to Gary McCullough on his win. Gary proved to be the strongest into an aggressive head wind on the return leg from Glenarm to Ballygalley. Rhys McKendry who looks to be in fine form this year had a great battle with Stephen Harkens who has made a strong return to racing after a few years. Rhys just pipped Stephen by 4 seconds for 2nd place. Ivan Cook in his first season with Team Madigan looks to have a lot to offer this year with a 24.50 and 4th place on what is a slow course. Peter Bingham in his first season with Madigan had a good ride taking 5th 2 seconds ahead of top over 50 Vet Chris Wheeler in 6th. Great rides by the young lads and Meta. Well done to everyone who give it a bash!

Thanks to Ronnie and Steven Stewart for timing the event. DR.

Bellahill Road Race

Club 20-mile Handicap Road Race Bellahill Wednesday 25th April 2018.
Congratulations to Gary McCullough winning a close 3-up sprint from Mikey Boal and young Chris Donald who along with young Johnnie McAuley to their credit were able to stay with the two scratch riders Gary and Mikey once caught on the last of 4 laps. Johnnie was only 10 seconds behind the 3-up sprint / all good stuff! Young Kellen did very well too in only his second road race and on a Hilly circuit this time.
Well done everyone it was a good race!

Ballynure 10 TT

Congratulations to Vet Gary McCullough on his win 23.19. Gary was the strongest into a head / cross wind on the return leg from Shanes-hill roundabout (A8) to Ballynure. Vet Ivan Cooke impressed too recording 23.56 on a hard night. Over 50 Vet Chris Wheeler was going well 24.19 and Meta Johnston had a strong ride with 25.11. Over 50 Vet Albert Douglas 5th also rode well with a 25.21 and Under 16 Chris Donald is getting better with every race recording a good 25.51. Over 50 Vet Bill Johnston lost time at the roundabout due to traffic build up but did well with his 27.41. Under 16 Johnnie McAuley who is also improving did well with a 27.50 into the wind. Callum Sittlington was the only Senior riding and he is making a return to racing this year after a few years at University he had a 28.01. Under 12 Luke Donald rode strong for his age with a superb 29.34. Vet Davy Blair is giving racing a go for the first time and is doing ok getting used to pace setting and breathing demands and will improve in time, keep going Davy everyone went through this at the beginning.

Ballycarry RR

Club 29-mile Handicap Road Race Ballycarry Wednesday 9th May 2018.
Congratulations to Chris Donald winning the up-hill sprint in good company in the form of Gary McCullough, Gary McClune and Stephen Harkens. Scratch men Stephen Harkens and Gary McCullough rode hard for most of the 29-mile hilly race before making the catch on lap 3 of 4. The ever improving Chris Donald and Gary McClune were the only riders able to stay with the scratch duo, and when it came to the sprint youthful legs on the tough hilly finish proved the winning formula.
It was a good race on a difficult circuit, made trickier after heavy rain all day left standing water in sections along with stones washed onto the roads, plus the potholes that have been on Manse Road at Beltoy for many months.
Well done to everyone it was a good race! Bad luck for Chris Wheeler with that puncture / never a nice thing when going so well.
Many thanks to the Marshals Peter Bingham, Kenny Logan, Chris Murray, Roy Lennox and Colin McAuley. Thanks also to Ronnie on the line. DR

Brown’s Bay Hilly TT

Congratulations to Stevie Harkens / good to see him back to the form he had a few years ago before he took a few years out. Stevie was pushed all the way by Gary McCullough and it was close with Gary only 25 seconds behind. Big Gary McClune had a good run also at 56 seconds behind Stevie. Albert was going great guns tonight with a superb 30.18 for the 63 year old. Ivan did well on his first test of Brown’s Bay for 5th place. Stephen Millar showed he is improving greatly in 6th just pipping Chris who rode well for 7th. Young Johnnie rode a blinder showing improvement with a 31.06. Meta and Bill had a good battle, and it was Meta who got the bragging rights this time. It was Peter’s first race at Brown’s Bay and he recorded a fair time after rushing from work. Young Luke shows he is coming along great with a superb 34.47. Veteran Davy Blair who is making progress in his first year racing did well on the tough hilly course. Well done all. Many thanks to the Marshals: David Stanbridge, Colin McAuley, Steven Stewart and Gary McKeegan, plus Stuarty Scott for holding the riders for their start. Timekeeper: Davy Ross. DR.

Moss Road, Road Race Results 30/5/18

Handicapping: Group 1 at zero, G 2 at 5 Mins, G3 at 7 Mins, G4 at 10 Mins and G5 scratch at 11 Mins 30 Secs (one full 4-mile lap).

Congratulations to Stephen Millar who won a 4-up sprint to the line and boy did he enjoy the win whooping and wowing with a big fist pump / good stuff Stephen. Ever improving under 16 Johnnie McAuley was a very close 2nd and delighted with his nights work. Chris Wheeler was in the mix too taking a deserved 3rd place and Duncan was chuffed with his 4th place in the sprint. Young Kellen who led the race along with David Brannigan for 5 ½ laps of the 6 laps was only 200 metres behind in 5th place and has to be delighted with his race in this his first year. It was a further 200 metres behind that Meta finished in 6th after driving her group 2 colleagues throughout the race. David Brannigan was a further 150 metres behind taking 7th and rode a blinder with Kellen out front for so long before being caught on the final climb of Castletown Road. Scratch man Gary McCullough took the 3-up sprint from Gary McClune and Stephen Harkens also scratch at 50 seconds behind the winning time, so the handicap was a little too harsh on this occasion, but the guys had a tremendous workout and were pleased about that. Bill Johnston was happy with his nights work in 11th, and Danny Hylands who had crunching gear problems from the start did very well to finish the race in 12th. Ivan Cooke should have been placed in group 3 rather than 4 for this tough wee course, but the big man battled hard to the end and finished only a few minutes down. Peter unfortunately went off course and had a good laugh about it / fair play to him! Many thanks to the Marshals who stood in at short notice. Joanne Lennox, Steven Stewart, Conor Clarke, and Colin McAuley. DR.

Ballyvallagh H’Cap Road Race 13/6/18

Congratulations to Gary McClune on winning this race from scratch. It was a difficult night for the riders as storm Hector was starting to take hold just prior to the race start. A decision was made to reduce it from 5 laps to 4 laps and 20-miles as the weather was to become worse.

Gary and Stephen Harkens were handicapped by 3 minutes in scratch and all of the other riders set off in one group. By lap two in the high wind and rain the front of the race had broken up and Stephen Millar along with Chris Wheeler were left to forge ahead. Gary McClune and Stephen Harkens were making big progress working well together and by lap three had passed all but Stephen Millar and Chris. The catch was later made on Ballyvallagh Road on the final lap and all four riders remained together until the final turn coming off the Watch-Hill Road into the up-hill finish of Ballyvallagh Road. Gary McClune was very strong and the gap opened to 20 metres to Stephen Harkens and 50 metres to Chris and 100 metres to Stephen Millar. Gary took the win with Stephen H a close second and Chris who closed in quickly was a very creditable third, as was Stephen M in fourth.

A big well done to all the riders and all the Marshals in harsh conditions! Thanks to Steven Stewart and Ballyfore Mission for kindly providing the Parking. DR.

Ballymena/Madigan 25-mile circuit T.T. 20/6/18

Congratulations to Gary McCullough for being the first Madigan rider in the Ballymena 25-mile Circuit Time Trial and 7th overall with his 1.00.55 time from 22 starters. Chris Wheeler had a creditable 1.04.39 on the undulating course that was wind swept for the entire 3 laps, plus it was a chilly night. Meta Johnston enjoyed her superb 1.07.05 on a night that was never going to produce fast times. John Madden recorded the fastest time of 57-minutes and our former member Richard Maybin recorded a superb 58-minute ride.

Brown’s Bay RR 25/7/18

Congratulations to Gary McCullough on his win. Handicap was Group 1 at zero. G2 at 2 mins. G3 at 3 mins. G4 at 6 mins. At the start of lap 2 of 4 Chris and Johnnie had caught group 2 who were riding well together. The two Gary’s were also working well together and were just 2 minutes behind as they crossed the line.

A lap later Chris broke clear on his own, Johnnie was caught, and both Gary’s and Johnnie chased hard to bridge across to the flying Chris who had 25 seconds on the three chasers. In the end it was the power of Gary McCullough who bridged the gap on his own to catch Chris and went on to open a gap of 1.35 on Chris at the finish line. Gary McClune was 3rd home at 1.51 behind. Johnnie was 4th at 3.15 behind. Bill Johnston and Kellen had a good race and a sprint out for 5th / Bill just winning it by a wheel / both 3.58 behind. Steven Stewart was 7th at 4.18 and Duncan was 8th at 4.52. Bad luck to David Brannigan who failed to finish. It was a good wee race and one that the young lads got a lot of experience from.

We had a lovely young girl as a guest under 14 rider Annie Roche who is on Holiday with the Donald family. Annie is a niece of the famous Stephen Roche. Annie could be a name to watch out for in the future with her family pedigree in cycle racing. Well done to all the riders for having a go. I hope that we can get the number of riders racing back up again, to where it used to be.

Many thanks to the Marshals Kenny Logan, Gary McKeegan, Mr & Mrs Donald, Chris Donald and Nichola & Geoff Swann. DR.
