Gary McClune Write up
Final Tour of the North update:
With snow lying on the north coast this morning, the race committee were left with no option but to abandon today’s planned Torr Head stage. To their credit, they quickly implemented a contingency plan and the riders set off at 10.30 for a re-run of yesterday’s stage and ANOTHER five climbs of Roguery hill.
When the flag dropped it was 2*C and the sleet was being blown across the road horizontally. This was a day only for the mentally tough (MAD!!) and our lads never blinked!!!
Im not sure what I’d have done without the heater around my feet in the car
In the conditions, several riders couldn’t bring themselves to face the start line this morning and many more abandoned early on. Gary Walker, Gary McCullough and Andy McCullough worked together as team all day, maintaining a strong position in the peloton throughout. Even a puncture wasn’t going to deter Gary Walker, who worked very hard to regain position after a quick wheel change.
Of the 26 teams that started, a depleted Team Madigan finished a very credible 12th in the team classification.
Of the 113 riders who started the race, Gary McCullough finished 39th, Gary Walker 46th and Andy McCullough 52nd.
Very well done lads
Finally, many thanks to Chris Donald (senior & junior) for your help in the car today. I’ve a feeling it won’t be too long before Chris junior has a slightly more active role in this race.
